SECOND CHANCE NEWSLETTER JAN. 10 2004
New Shipment Has Arrived
Last Tuesday saw the most recent shipment arrive. Lots of cool stuff, lots of staple items, lots of gourmet foods and Asian items. Some are listed below. This is a bit longer than usual (sorry), but it's been awhile since we had a big newsletter. This newsletter includes some links to photos of the foods we're listing here. We haven't done this before, thought we'd try it just for fun, and see how it goes. (We're hoping a picture really is worth a thousand words....................)
The spice list on the front page of the website has been updated this month, and an email link on the recipe page has been fixed.
Here we go........................
Jumex Fruit Juice
Most American fruit juice drinks are 5% or 10% fruit juice. Jumex ranges from 23% to 45% fruit juice, and at only 25 cents a can, it's a real bargain. Flavors such as papaya-pineapple, strawberry, mango, peach, guava, guanabana, and pear give plenty of choice.
Lots And Lots Of Not Milk
Lots and lots of soy and rice milk in stock right now, including chocolate, vanilla, and 2%.
Taco Boxes On Sale
Lynn's sort of overloaded right now with taco dinners and boxes of taco shells, taco dinners, etc., so she's marked all of these down to $1.00 a box.
Random Selections From The New Shipment
Mincemeat, $1.00 (BSP about $7.00)
Cholula Hot Sauce from Mexico, 50 cents
Table Cream, $1.00 (BSP $2.29)
Cake Icing, lots of varieties, $1.00
Fancy Lunches For Cheap
It was just a matter of time.... I figured with the popularity of Ramen noodles, somebody would eventually take the idea a step further. Well, they have, and the result is Health Valley soups. For 75 cents each, you get a slightly larger, but much better tasting, version of Ramen noodles. All you need for a good tasting hot lunch at work is water and a microwave.
What Do You Do With This Stuff?
For some time, we've had Goya Guava Paste in stock, and we've really not known what to do with it. Lenore, one of our customers, grew up in Central America, and told us this Dominican Republic item is used like this Cut the block into squares, roll the cubes in powdered sugar, stick them with toothpicks, and serve as snacks or appetizers. She says it's a big favorite "back at home".
Pinedale Farms
Pinedale Farms out on Reed Rd here in Starkville now mills their own corn meal, and Lynn has been able to get some 2# bags. This locally milled corn meal sells for $3/bag. (You can't get this at the Big Stores.........)
Dickinson's Fruit Preserves And Spreadable Pure Fruit
Dickinson's is sort of a "pure fruit" division of Smucker's (see http//www.dickinsonsfamily.com)
that makes really cool preserves and such. SCG just got in flavors like strawberry, apricot, red raspberry, black raspberry, blueberry, orange marmalade, elberta peach, boysenberry, etc. Their website (which is well done with lots of good photos and recipes) has this propaganda about their preserves "Traditional Preserves are the undisputed favorite of Dickinson's lovers worldwide. No wonder! Each jar is brimming with premium fruit picked at the height of perfect ripeness. And long-time fans are comforted by the consistency of Dickinson's preserves' quality and signature flavor, dependable mainstays year in and year out."
These are pretty cool jars of good fruit, and the SCG price is $1.95, well under the BSP of $3.85.
Girard's Salad Dressings
Back before we were in the salvage grocery business, we used to wonder what a bottle of really expensive salad dressing tasted like, and wondered if it was worth the money. We still don't know if they're worth the BSP, but we now know they taste GREAT. We have Girard's Salad Dressings such as Champagne, Parmesan Peppercorn, Romano Cheese, Caesar, and Caesar Light for only $1.50 a bottle. These are the familiar triangle shaped bottles with the gold foil tops.
Fifty 50 Spreadable Apple
Dodging sugar? Check out Fifty 50 spreadable fruits, made with Nutrasweet instead of sugar.
SCG has this for only $1.75.
Cakes And Brownies
Not dodging sugar? Cake mixes are 75 cents, and brownie mixes are 50 cents. Cheap enough!
Get Sauced
World Harbor Sauces. First found these in a salvage grocery a few years ago. After trying them, I went back and bought all they had. They're wonderful sauces, but the BSP was (is) too much for our budget, so we watched for these in every salvage grocery we found. Now we have several selections, such as Guadalupe Fajita, Acadia Lemon Pepper Garlic, After Glow Hot Wing, and Luau Tropical Barbecue. The SCG price is a miserly $1.75 each, and they're great as marinades and as dipping sauces.
Naranja Aria (Bitter Orange)
I'm in the dark on this one. This is apparently used in marinades and beverages, but you'll have to figure this one out yourself. I'm putting this up because the color of the Naranja Aria is so pretty in the glass bottle. It's 75 cents if you want to experiment.
Cardini's Salad Dressings
They claim they invented the Caesar dressing; I don't know, I wasn't there. Several varieties of Cardini's are in stock, such as Caesar, Light Caesar, Roasted Garlic, Vintage White Wine, Balsamic with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, all for $1.50 each. These are made by the Marzetti family, who also make the Girard's dressings.
Gour-Mayo
We've talked about these before, but now we have Chipotle Chili, Sun Dried Tomato, and Wasabi Horseradish flavors in stock for 75 cents each.
Angustura, Roses, Etc.
Real Angustra Bitters, Rose's Lime Juice, and Sweetened Lime Juice are stocked just under the coffee.
If you're looking for a drink mixer, we have several brands and styles in stock (we don't order it, it just shows up in the boxes), ranging from 25-40 oz. per bottle, all marked $1.50 each. Some of the ones in stock right now are
Jose Cuervo Margarita mix
Jose Cuervo Strawberry Margarita mix
Mr./Mrs. T Bloody Mary (regular and Rich and Spicy)
Holland House Daquiri
Pina Colada
Finest Call Strawberry Puree
Dailey's Mocha Mudslide (beats me)
Holland House Sweet/Sour
Dailey's Sweet/Sour
Holland House Strawberry Daquiri and Margarita Mix
Holland House Tom Collins
Holland House Manhattan
Major Peters Salsa Flavored Bloody Mary Mix (makes a great chili base)
Joyful Java Just Jives
Several new coffee selections; CC's Gourmet Coffees, special gourmet, breakfast blends, french roast, 8 O'Clock Columbian beans, Luzianne, Chock Full O'Nuts, etc. Most all of these are only $1.50.
Kiwi Galore
Tons (well, not actually "tons", but a lot) of Kiwi products showed up in this load. All sorts of show polish, soe laces, leather conditioner, saddle soap, suede cleaner, mink oil (I guess it keeps your mink from squeaking), and related items.
Votive Early, and Votive Often
Lots of neat votive candles right now, for 25 cents each. Scents like blueberry, vanilla, strawberry, fresh fig, rain forest, etc. Tea lights, 10/$1.00, 6/50 cents.
Summer's Coming. Be Prepared.
Yes, about 90 days from now we'll be opening the windows, and next thing you know, we'll be swatting flies. Lynn has several "Mosquito X" devices in stock, which are supposed to repel the nasty critters. These retail for $14.99, she's marked them $7.00 each. They take one C cell each. Do they work? I've never tried them, so I don't know. However, with the Nile virus thing happening, anything that runs off skeeters is worth a try in my book.
If you have a spare moment, visit www.First-UMC.Org, the website of Starkville's First United Methodist Church.
"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Rev. 2212-13.
Come by, bring a friend, get your feet warm, have a cup of coffee, and visit. Lynn, Dave, and Ben would enjoy the company!
