Feb. 7, 2003

A new group of items arrived this week.... Kosher foods. Manischewitz is the dominant name brand among these foods, and the line includes matzo balls (salted and unsalted), several soups and mixes, pickled fish, etc. Also in this load were a lot of interesting pickles and olives.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are now in the "deep discount" basket near the front of the store.
The February newspaper special is all Kraft 16 oz. salad dressings are marked $1.00. This includes Thousand Island, Italian, Catalina, Ranch, some of the most popular flavors. So, with the big sale going on, you'd think there's be plenty of salad dressings in the house, right? Well, in keeping with the notion that the cobbler's children have no shoes, and the plumber's house has leaky pipes, we had no Thousand Island dressing in the house last night. To improvise, I started to make some of my usual Thousand Island, only to discover we were out of plain old ketchup. (Remember the cobbler's children?)
One of the items that arrived this week was mesquite flavored ketchup. Having some of that on hand, I made a Mesquite Thousand Island that was really good, especially when followed by a beef entree. The dressing had a sort of spicy, smoky flavor, was simple to make, and very inexpensive considering all the ingredients came from Second Chance Grocery. Here's the dressing recipe:

Mesquite Thousand Island Dressing
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup mesquite ketchup
1/3 cup sweet pickle relish

Mix all the above together, and it's ready to serve immediately. This is enough for 4-6 adults. Refrigerate any unused portions.
