Happy Valentine's Day, y'all.
The new shipment has arrived, and most of it is out. The processing room has been extra busy, as this load brought a lot of product we've never seen. Lots and lots of Goya brand foods, including some exotic stuff we've never seen anywhere.
We'll just list some of the high spots, and you find it interesting.
GOYA, GOYA, GOYA, GOYA
Lots and lots of Goya brand dry beans, mostly one pound bags. Black beans, small red beans, yellow split peas, navy beans, chick peas, etc. for only 45 cents per pound. Soups, red or black beans and rice, bean dip, all need a starting supply of dry beans.
If you don't have time to soak the dry beans overnight (and you don't have a pressure cooker), we also have a large supply of Goya canned beans. Chick peas (garlands), black beans, red kidney, cannellini (a lot like navy beans), pinto beans, etc., all 15.5 oz. cans, all 45 cents. The exception is the canned green pigeon peas, which are 35 cents (in Spanish, they're "Gandules Verdes").
Olives. Gosh, I love olives. Goya makes some of my favorite olives, which are stuffed green olives seasoned with capers. When I was a kid, capers were a luxury food, and olives flavored with capers was unheard of. You can get an 8 oz. jar (medium sized jar) of green olives, stuffed with pimientos, and seasoned with capers, for only $1.20.
Capers. These magical buds of delight, in a 2.25 oz jar, are only $1.00 (regular big store price is $2.30). A few capers sprinkled over a salad, or as a garnish on baked potatoes, is a joy.
Goya soft drinks. Really. For only 25 cents, you can get a 12 oz. bottle of Goya soda, with flavors as diverse as mandarin, coconut, pineapple, tamarind, and cola champagne. How about Malta Goya? It's a non-alcoholic malt drink, very trendy in some urban areas, but basically unknown in Starkville outside a few imported college students. A big South American favorite, these little pony malts are only 25 cents.
Guava Paste. No kidding, Goya makes a one pound box of guava paste, straight from the Dominican Republic. So, what's a pound of guava paste go for these days? At Second Chance, it's only $1.00.
Lots of Goya seasonings and bouillon. Fish bouillon (for making soup), and the hard-to-find Sazon Goya, which is the seasoning for making proper yellow rice.
So, by now you have the general idea. Lots and lots of Goya products, many of which are brand new items.
COFFEE Cafe La Llave (ground, 10 oz bag), and Maxwell House Italian Espresso Roast (ground, 11.5 oz. bag), only $1.50 each.
CHRISTMAS IS OVER (FOR NOW) Post-holiday items include canned egg-nog (Bordens, 1 qt can) for only $1.65. It doesn't go bad, and now that the holidays are over, you actually have time to sit down and enjoy a glass without the holiday rush. Mincemeat, an expensive holiday treat, is only $2.50 for a 27 oz. jar, instead of the usual $6.00 at the big stores. Make your mincemeat pies now, or stock up on these non-perishables and make your pies for cheap nine months from now.
CANNING SEASON IS AROUND THE CORNER We don't know how these could possibly be clearance items, but we have a large supply of Ball lids for Mason jars. 12 dome lids for wide mouth jars is only $1.00, and a dozen lids with bands (also for wide mouth jars) is only $1.50. Snatch up some for your next batch of jelly or relish before we run out. We don't get these on every shipment.
MCCORMICK ONE STEP SEASONINGS These are great seasonings, with varied flavors like Tex-Mex Chili and Lemon-Pepper Chicken. The one large jar has all the seasonings you need for whatever dish is one the label. A real bargain at $1.00.
SNACK EXPRESS KITS These big boxes have everything it takes to make different snacks, such as S'Mores or Rice Krispie Bars. Made by Duncan Hines, these fast snacks can be made in microwave or conventional oven. Instead of paying $2.99 at the big stores, get them here for only $1.50.
I GO NUTS AT TIMES Hawaiian Macadamia Nuts (roasted/salted or honey roasted), in the foil bag, are a real treat. Usually these are too expensive to buy in the big stores, but at Second Chance, the foil bag (3.53 oz, a lot more nuts than it sounds like) is only $1,50, instead of $3.49.
PICKLES, PICKLES, PICKLES Golly-gee, Batman, do we have pickles. Banana peppers, pepper rings, pimientos, chili peppers, sweet pepper mix, kosher dills, dill relish, jalapeno flavored baby dills, hot cherry peppers, sweet midgets, whole jalapenos, sliced jalapenos, greek peppers, sweet relish, and on, and on, and on..........................
SOME FROM THE WEIRD AISLE Spontex gloves (not latex), for hair care or washing duties, only $1.00 a pair. Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner, 7 oz, $2.00. Wright's Jewelry Cleaner, 6 oz, $1.50.
Wright's Copper Cream, 8 oz, $1.00. And my favorite................... 3" rolls of thermal paper, only 50 cents a roll, compared to $3.50/roll. If you need thermal paper rolls, these are more than affordable.
PAUL PRUDHOMME SEASONINGS Blackened poultry, blackened steak, blackened redfish, and seafood. We covered these items a few issues ago, and we have a restock with this shipment. They're $2.00 each, still way less than the big stores, and available for this price only at Second Chance.
NEED TO DODGE SUGAR? We've got lots of fructose-sweetened cookies and candy bars in stock right now.
LAST BIG-DEAL ITEM (WE THINK) If you're a fancier of the more exotic foods, we now have a few 32 oz. jars of pickled date palm for only $1.50.
As we prepare ourselves for the difficult times ahead, whether the troubles be Iraq, the economy, North Korea, meeting our bills, or directing our children, let us end with this instruction from Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Book Of Matthew, Chapter 6:
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
