And Now For Something Completely Different.........

This was Monty Python's famous saying for moving from one skit to another when there was no other logical way to merge the two.   Well, today we actually DO have items that are completely different from what we've had before, and we can't wait to tell you about them.   The most recent shipment has some really tasty stuff in it.

Just Add Water

Instant Refried Beans.   A box with 7 oz. of dehydrated seasoned refried beans, reconstitutes and serves up in five minutes.   This is a great 99 cent deal.  A few years ago, we found some dried refried black beans in foil pouches, and they made for great black bean soup.  I imagine these would be great fro something similar if you didn't want just regular refried frijoles.
Falafel.  This is a Middle Eastern dish used as a stuffing for pita bread.  Add water, make into balls, and fry. This dollar box is a whole penny more expensive than the refried frijoles. You can read about this famous vegetarian food at http://www.cooking.com/recipes/static/recipe4858.htm, or just read this bit from that page:  "
Street vendors usually tuck falafel into pita bread with chopped lettuce and tomato and plenty of tahini sauce. At home, the balls can be served as an hors d'oeuvre, with a bowl of Tahini Sauce for dipping. "  Tahini sauce?  Hey........  SCG's had that in stock for some time..........
Risotto Milanese.  The Knorr box (which costs a whole 99 cents) says an "arborio style rice in creamy sauce".   Not familiar with arborio rice?  Here's the short of it: "
Arborio rice, a pearly-looking, round, fat, Italian white rice, forms the foundation of risotto, the dish. Riso means rice in Italian. Like other rices, Arborio is a member of the grass family. What distinguishes it is a higher than normal amount of soluble starch that is released during cooking. The starch is what makes a risotto creamy."  The rest of this description can be read at: http://www.seasonbyseason.com/pantry/ingredients/arborio_rice_ing.html
Knorr Jasmine Rice with Lemon and Herbs.  No other description necessary.  99 cents.
Couscous.  One of Lynn's favorites, this Near East mix has herbed chicken, and cooks in only fie minutes.  At $1.99, it's way less than the BSP.

Hold The Dairy, Please
Quart boxes of goat milk (in date!) make a good solution for those with lactose issues.  If milk or lactose doesn't disrupt your day, you can just be adventurous for only 99 cents.  Can't get a quart of anything for less than a buck these days, unless you go to Second Chance.

Water, Water, Everywhere..........

This great line from Rime Of The Ancient Mariner brings to mind the seafaring ones who have kept the world supplied with seafood since time out of mind.  In the old days, you had to live near a seaport to have seafood, but no more.  Due to the marvels of canning, SCG has these tasty morsels of the sea in stock right now:

Crab Meat, 6 oz. can, $1.79
Pink Salmon, 14.75 oz, 99 cents
Baby Clams, 10 oz,  99 cents
Red Salmon (Fancy Blueback), 14.75 oz, $1.99
Whole Oysters, 8 oz., 99 cents and........... (drum roll, please)
Spiced Octopus in Red Sauce, 4 oz, 99 cents.

I mean, gosh............  For less than five bucks, you can dine on oysters, crab, clams, and octopus all in the same night.  Try that in a seafood restaurant......... It would $30 at least.

Stuff It

SCG has a good supply of fancy olives.  To be honest, one of these jars won't make it back to the store, because I've tried these before, and claimed that jar as payment for writing this newsletter. These are olives stuffed with orange and lemon.  Green manzanilla olives (big ones) stuffed with chunks  of orange or lemon.  Talk about good.   These jars qualify as sho-'nuf gourmet, and are only $1.99 a jar.
If you don;t buy anything else at SCG this week, try to snag a jar or two of these.  If you like olives, these will make your head spin.

Strawberries.  Yum.
Back around 1983 or 1984, Lynn and I went on a trip to the Ozarks in May.  Along side the road, we found a farmer's market full of fresh strawberries.  We bought a quart, and ate them as we cruised the mountain roads.  The little green stems we tossed out of the sunroof of the Chevette.  Miles later, when we stopped for gas, the roof was dotted with green stems.  The red roof of that little Chevy had specks from Strawberry acid for years to come.
The thing is, these were fresh strawberries.  Not frozen, no preservatives, etc.   Reading the label for the Tropical Strawberry Preserves, that trip came to mind.  The fruit in these jars is dated 2004, and went from fresh to the jar in only 36 hours.  No preservatives, no coloring, no artificial flavors, etc.    Just rich, deep red strawberries in a jar.  (Come to think of it.............  Maybe my pay needs to be olives AND strawberries this time.............)  In any case, 99 cents for this 22 oz jar is way too cheap.

Today's Good Word

"Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ,  to keep Satan from gaining the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his designs."     Paul writing to the Corinthians  (2 Cor 2:10-11)
