SECOND CHANCE NEWSLETTER MARCH 30, 2003

To The Moon, Alice, To The Moon......
Forget Ralph Kramden, we're talking Moon Pies here.  This treat, which originated  in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has become an American icon.  I have memories of people going into country stores when I was a kid and asking for a "Moon Pie and a Nehi belly-washer".  (A Nehi belly-washer was a 16 oz. Nehi soft drink, usually "peach".)  The Moon Pie marches on, and has it's own website, with more info than you'd ever want to know about this venerable treat.  Learn all there is to know about Moon Pies at www.moonpie.com
One thing you won't learn at the Moon Pie site is that Second Chance has the original chocolate Moon Pies, as well as vanilla and raspberry flavored Moon Pies, six to the box, for about a buck a box.  I say "about", because I forgot to note the price, and Lynn can't remember.  In any case, they're the least expensive Moon Pies in town.

New Shipment Just Arrived
Last Wednesday, another 140 cases of groceries arrived, as well as another eight cases of coffee.  The good part is, it's all been unloaded and is ready for serious shopping.

Speaking Of Coffee
I just got an email from my cousin Frances, who now lives in Virginia.  She awoke today to find the ground covered with snow from an overnight blizzard.  She said the most reasonable course of action seemed to get a cup of hot coffee and go back to bed.  Blizzards in March.  Wow.

And, Speaking Of Coffee
The JFG Coffee Co. started in 1882, and is now part of the Luzianne Co., that great Southern food company.  (They make the Louisiana style coffee with chicory that you have to have with beignets, like the Cafe Du Monde serves.) Second Chance has a large supply right now of JFG coffee, and most of the bags have the vacuum intact. Varieties include Rich French Roast and Special.  Get your 11.5 ounces of fresh Arabica for only $1.50.

More Of Paul
SCG has a wide and deep selection of Paul Prudhomme Magic Seasonings right now.  These are what you need for blackened steak, fish, etc.  These boxes of wonder are priced way, way under the Big Store Price (BSP).  Read about the seasonings, and even get a free three-pack of Magic Seasoning samples by visiting www.chefpaul.com.

Four Hotels On Park Place......................
In Monopoly, few people ever get to have four hotels on Park Place.  It's just too expensive.  If you're behind in the game, landing on Park Place with four hotels is a luxury you can't afford.  It could break the bank.  Fortunately, life isn't like Monopoly, because Second Chance makes many of the "luxury" grocery items affordable for everyone, giving even the tightest budget a chance to live it up and stay within our means.  Here are some examples:
Gardetto's Family Bakery Breadsticks  These come Original Salted, Garlic Herb, Robusto Italian, etc.  The BSP is $1.69, which is a lot for 16 breadsticks in a fancy foil pouch.  But, the SCG price is only 50 cents, which lets you put more fancy bread on the table while keeping more folding bread in your pocket.
Emeril's Basting Sauce And Marinade This 12 oz. bottle with Emeril's smiling mug on the label comes in numerous flavors, including Sesame Asian, Orange Herb,  etc.  It's probably pretty good stuff, but I'd never pay the BSP of $3.39 to find out.  At the SCG price of $1.50, maybe I'd buy a bottle to see what all the fuss is about.
Nonni's Biscotti Decadence  If you like biscotti, this chocolate almond version is a necessary luxury from time to time.  Dipped in chocolate, it's best served with hot coffee or tea.  The BSP on this pretty box is $3.79, the SCG price is less than half at $1.50.
Mincemeat  Get some of this and save it for the holidays, or add a pie shell and make a mincement pie now.  Instead of the usual $7.00 and up BSP, we have these 27 oz jars for a measly $2.00 at SCG.

Thanks for subscribing.  We're open 10-6, Tuesday - Saturday.  Come visit, have some coffee, see what's new.  Remember, "Friends don't let friends overspend for groceries."
