Blue 'Bout Bleu
I always thought bleu cheese dressing was sort of exotic.  Maybe it's the idea of funny colored cheese, or the odd French spelling of "bleu", or maybe because when I was a kid it always cost an extra dime to order a salad with bleu cheese.  I was redoing Lynn's salad dressing list tonight, and noticed that almost all of the bleu cheese varieties were spelled as "blue" cheese.   Sensing some evil perverting of the natural and proper spelling of this fine, odorous cheese, I consulted the very pinnacle of epicurean knowledge in Starkville:  Cary Sutphin.  If anybody in this town would know the ins and out of properly spelling bleu (or blue) cheese, it would be him.
He sort of tore down the mental pedestal where I stored my synaptic image of bleu cheese.  Seems either spelling is correct. As he put it, "It's the same as trying to decide if it's ketchup or catsup; it's probably got more to do with your market than it does correctness.".  Basically, it's whatever you preference happens to be.  I researched the question of preference by using the Google search engine.  There are 151,000 references to "blue" cheese, as opposed to 36,600 references to "bleu" cheese, so I guess my old notion of "bleu" being even the preferred spelling loses out.  Oh, well.
Speaking of bleu, I mean, blue cheese dressing, SCG has several varities of blue cheese dressings in stock right now among the over 50 flavors and brands on the shelf.  To see a complete and current list of dressingss, visit http://www.secondchancegrocery.com/dressings.htm.

New Shipment Now On The Shelves
A new shipment arrived today, and most of it is already out on the shelves.

Two Reasons

Thought today of two good reasons not to be on the Dr. Atkins diet: One, you can't have a cold glass of milk without cheating.  Two, you can't have any Mrs. Fields cookies with your cold glass of milk.  They've got carbohydrates (or "carbs", as the Atkins adherents refer to them) which are fine for us regular folk, but not so good on the high protein diet Dr. Atkins made famous.  (Follow this link for nutritional info and carb data: http://www.mrsfields.com/misc/nutrition )
SCG's got lots of two varieties of Mrs. Fields cookies in stock right now, the White Chunk Macadamias, and the Milk Chocolate Chips.  Ahhhhhh.................  Cookies and milk.

Polly Wanna Cracker?

Carr's is a revered British bakery famous for it's crackers since 1831.  They come packed in boxes, each box holding about as many crackers as you'd usually find in a tube of saltines.  These are thin, crispy golden delights.  Each box bears the seal of Queen Victoria's Royal Warrant.  These make great snack crackers.  They come in several varieties; Table, Cheddar, Sesame Seed, Cracked Pepper, Poppy Sesame, and Ginger Lemon Cremes.  Quite the international steal for only $1.00 each.

Grab A Handful

Everybody's got a favorite candy bar. Mine happens to be Mounds.  Well, Lynn just received a large supply of standard sized candy bars of all types (Crunch, Payday, Zero, Caramel Crunch, Nutrageous, Fast Break, Whatchmacallit, Turtles, Hershey's Special Dark, etc.) that are priced for only 25 cents each.  At this price, you can afford to grab a handful for later.

The Icing On The Cake
Pre-made cake icing is usually pretty expensive, but SCG has a good supply of decorative icing in a wild array of colors.  White, black (really, black), blue, green, yellow, red, purple, teal, pink, etc. icings can dress up a plain cake pretty quickly.  The DecACake squeeze tubes (4.25 oz) are $1.25.  The Betty Crocker can (6.4 oz) with four nozzles is $1.25, and the Betty Crocker spray can (1.5 oz, and yes, it's really a spray can) is only 50 cents.  Even the little spray can says it's got enough to cover four 9 X 13 cake pans.
If that's not enough to get you fired up for the Fourth, try the Pillsbury Stars And Stripes cake mix.  It's a white cake with little blue and red stars and stripes in the mix, and blue and red stars and stripes to sprinkle on top.  Quite the patriotic after-dinner treat.  It's only 75 cents at SCG.

A Major Mix Up
"Major Peters" is an award winning bloody mary mix that comes in several styles.  Two that SCG has a good stock on right now are the "Hot And Spicy" blend, and the "Salsa" blend.  Each bottle is a full liter (that's just over a quart for us regular folks) of spicy tomato juice for only $1.50.
I've been wondering how a bottle of the salsa flavored mix would work as a base for a big pot of chili............

Tastes Just Like Chicken

Lynn's got a whole bunch (i.e., a lot) of little Durkee Poultry Seasoning bottles, each holding just over a half ounce of seasoning.  These are on sale right now, NO LIMIT ON QUANTITY, at the silly low price of 2 for 25 cents.  That's more than an ounce of seasoning for only a quarter.  You won't see deals like this at our local Big Stores.

Mallow?  What's A Mallow?
I've wondered at times how the words "marsh" and "mallow" got together to make up the ever popular "marshmallow".  Even more than that, I've wondered what a "mallow" is.  Turns out a "mallow" is a tropical tree abundant in the American tropics.  Many of these mallows grew in marsh-like areas, and the roots of these "marsh mallows" were used to make the confection we now know as the "marshmallow".  (I promise I'm not making this up.)
SCG has bags and bags and bags of miniature marshmallows (white ad multicolored, the big 10.5 oz bags) for only 50 cents each.  Drop by and get a few bags of tropical botanical memories.

New Item Of The Week

French's has made a new product called "GourMayo" (think "gourmet mayo"), which is light mayonnaise flavored with sun dried tomatoes.  It's half the fat and calories of regular mayo.  The handy squeeze bottle is only 75 cents.
