SECOND CHANCE GROCERY NEWSLETTER                            SEPT. 5, 2004

No Gear Oil Here...........

Second Chance has a wide selection of interesting and useful oils for the kitchen.  Sesame, olive (several varieties), walnut, and peanut oils are all in stock at way below the Big Store Price.  Olive oil makes great salad dressing and is a must for any well stocked kitchen, but walnut oil?  According to the boss, walnut oil can also be used for treating wounds and as a massage oil.  (If you use it for the latter, and you find yourself being followed by the neighborhood squirrels, you may want to go back to keeping the walnut oil in the kitchen.)
For the more conventional who do keep their walnut oil in the kitchen (walnut oil?), we foundthis helpful description of it on the website www.WhatsCookingAmerica.net

Walnut Oil - This expensive, delicate, light-colored, unrefined, specialty oil is generally made in the Perigord and Burgundy regions of France. Unlike other nut oils, unrefined walnut oil is made from nuts that are dried and then cold-pressed. Walnut oil is high in polyunsaturated fats. It has a rich, nutty flavor that is perfect for salad dressings, to flavor fish and steaks, to toss with pasta, and to jazz up desserts. Walnut oil is best used uncooked or in cold sauces because when it is heated, it can become slightly bitter. This flavor, however, can be a pleasant taste when experienced in moderation. Unrefined walnut oil is terrific on salads, particularly when you combine it with bits of walnuts. Add walnut oil to a chicken or turkey salad along with some grapes and chopped walnuts. Brush a thin coat of walnut oil on grilled fish and steaks just before serving. Toss freshly cooked pasta in a mixture of walnut oil and spices. Try using walnut oil in dessert recipes that will be enhanced by the nutty flavor.
We also found a really cool webpage that explains all there is to know about the differences between the various grades of olive oil.  That page can be found at www.oliveoilsource.com/definitions.htm

It's A Piece Of Cake
For those who have been asking, we finally have some cake mixes.  Check out the Pillsbury Yellow and Butter Recipe Yellow Cake Mixes for 75 cents.
Too much sugar?  Why not try Sweet 'n Low Cake Mixes?  We've got Chocolate, White, and Lemon Snack Cake Mixes for 75 cents each.

No Dull Cakes Here
Need to decorate that cake?  Well anybody can slap on canned frosting, but we've got the supplies to satisfy your creative urges.  First we've got Betty Crocker Decorating Icings with those fancy spouts that lets you make ribbons, stars, leaves, roses, or simply write a special message.  They're
$1.25 each and come in white, orange, black, green, red, blue, and pink.
Next we have Betty Crocker Decorating Spray in blue, red, and green.  For 99 cents ($2.99 BSP) you can add light sprays of color or create a design by spraying through a stencil.

Is It Raining, Or Just Sprinkling?
Need sprinkles?  We have big canisters of Betty Crocker Parlor Perfect Confetti Sprinkles for 99 cents.  These would be good on cake, ice cream, cookies, yogurt, pies, pudding, or gelatin desserts.   Betty Crocker also makes Sugar Sprinkles (think sugar crystals).  We sell a set of six (blue, white, yellow, red, orange, and green) for $1.50.

Shape Up
In the glossy magazines, I've always admired the sculptures created from marzipan or candy dough.  You simply add a little bit of food coloring and roll and press your creature into life.  The box shows snowmen, roses, and cute miniature pumpkins with whole cloves for the stems. Since marzipan is simply sugar and almonds, it tastes good too!  Try your hand at edible sculpture with Odense's Marzipan for $2.19 (BSP = $4.29).

Sounds Good To Me
I don't know if you would put these on cake or not, but the Reception Stick Candies are so festive, they have to fit in somewhere with your celebration.  These are candy sticks partially dipped in chocolate.  The flavors are lemon, orange, cinnamon, and mint.  We sell them for 99 cents which is a big savings over the BSP of $2.59.

Come On By
When you're finished eating your cake creations, stop by the store again and share a cup of coffee with us.  My momma always told me that hot coffee melts all the calories and I know my momma doesn't lie!

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Romans 12:16
