SECOND CHANCE NEWSLETTER NOV. 21, 2004

Thanksgiving Schedule

Second Chance will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Updates!

You've got to watch Ben. Lynn left him unsupervised the other day, and he put together current lists of dressings, marinades, and spices in stock down at SCG. These new lists are now on the front page of our humble little website, just under the menu. So, if we're closed and you're wondering what you're going to marinate that turkey in, you can still browse the shelves.
That Ben. You gotta watch him.

A Smattering

Lynn brought a smattering of some of the foods she wants to mention this issue. She didn't say why she wants to mention these, so I guess I'll have to try to figure it out on my own. I'm pretty good at research, but can't guarantee that what I uncover is the same reason she had for mentioning these items. I can't even guarantee anything beyond the item name and SCG price is even remotely accurate. One can't vouch for what one hears in the street...................

Knott's Berry Farm Mint Flavored Apple Jelly, BSP $2.29, SCG $1.19
Gourmet Award Apple Mint Jelly, SCG $1.19.
(Mrs. John Adams was a devoted fan of apple mint jelly, long before Knott's Berry Farm was around.)

Reese Jellied Mint Sauce, BSP $2.55, SCG $1.29
Gilway Fresh Garden Mint Sauce, BSP $5.99, SCG $2.99
This is wonderful served with a roast beef or roast lamb. Lord Cornwall dined on beef and the last of his jellied mint sauce the night before he surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown.

Easy Mac (6 packs of mac and cheese in a big box), flavored like "Tombstone Brand Cheese Pizza".
BSP $3.49, SCG $2.19 (Macaroni and cheese was a favorite of Myron Floren, the accordian player on the Lawrence Welk Show.)

Double Luck Green Beans, SCG 35 cents. (Lynn says this is her mother's favorite.)

Atkins Low Carb Bread Mixes, both Caraway Rye and Sourdough. BSP $7.95, SCG $3.99
(There are records that the Egyptians made sourdough bread 6,000 years ago.)

Chef Williams' Mild Cajun Injectable Marinade, BSP $4.25, SCG $1.99. (Modern injectable marinades were invented by Louisiana veterinarian Renauld Montier, who was cooking a turkey and couldn't find his baster. Using a "large animal" syringe, he dosed his bird with a vinegar, sugar, and pepper mix, and a new cooking method was spawned.)

London Pub Major Grey Chutney, BSP $4.99, SCG $2.59. ("London Pub" is the brand, "Major Grey" is the style of chutney. It's heavy on mangoes, and was a popular side in British India, inspiring this little ditty: "All things chickeny and mutt'ny, Taste far better when served with chutney, This is the mystery eternal: Why didn't Major Grey make Colonel?")

Dona Maria Mole, SCG $2.00. (Most gringos aren't familiar with mole, but it is absolutely an essential item for any Mexican kitchen. It's made from ground chilies, sugar, and cocoa. Lynn brought some home from Mexico in 1983. A tablespoon added to a pot of chili makes the chili real. The chilies add a bit of spice, and the cocoa neutralizes the acid in the tomatoes, eliminating the acid needed for acid heartburn. I have a bottle of this in my refrigerator right now, and used it to flavor some venison chili I made last week. The 'net is full of mole recipes. It's pronounced " moe'-lee ". )

Pace Brand Enchilada Sauce, Roasted Ranchero Cooking Sauce, and Cilantro and Lime Cooking Sauce,
SCG $1.50. (Pace picante sauce was first made in San Antonio in 1947, and was sold door to door. Their famous TV ad line that referred to the competition's salsa "This stuff's made in New York City?" was uttered by Bubba Gilliam, a famous Texas actor who made his screen debut in Blazing Saddles.)

Territorial House Green Chili Medium Salsa SCG $1.50. (Another Pace product, this is the salsa served in the Territorial House Restaurant in New Mexico. The original hacienda was built by Diego Montoya in 1801.)

Happy Thanksgiving

As we enter the Thanksgiving holiday, we're reminded that giving thanks isn't something invented by the pilgrims on that feast day less than four hundred years ago. In the RSV of the Bible, the phrase "give thanks" appears 55 times. Thousands of years ago, these words were written in the Scriptures:

Psalm 92:1 It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to Thy name, O Most High.

1 Chronicles 16 :35 Say also: "Deliver us, O God of our salvation, and gather and save us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to Thy holy name, and glory in Thy praise.

Psalms 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him, bless His name!
