SECOND CHANCE NEWSLETTER DEC. 6, 2003
New Shipment Has Arrived
A new, large shipment arrived this week, and the shelves are very full. We're also getting a lot of new and interesting items we've not seen before.
Little Debbie
The Little Debbie brand has been around at least since I was a kid. right now SCG has a good supply of Double Chocolate Swiss Cake Rolls. The come 12/box, and are marked at only 75 cents/box. These are even still in date.
Little Debbie Cosmic Crispy bars (think rice krispie bars with M and M's) come 8/box, and Lynn has marked these at 80 cents, which is half of the Big Store Price (BSP) of $1.59.
Hey, Honey!
People who really like honey know that honey tastes differently depending on what sort of plants the bees had to work with. Dutch Gold honey labels their honey with just hat information. SCG now has a good supply of Dutch Gold "Alfalfa" honey in one pound jars. (www.DutchGoldHoney.Com)
The SCG price is a measley $3.00, which is a real bargain compared to the BSP of $10.95. This may well be the buy of the week!
100% Pure Maple Syrup (The Real Thing)
We're all used to pancake syrups that are "maple flavored". Just in time for holiday breakfasts, SCG has 9 oz. cans of 100% pure Vermont maple syrup. The can is marked "U.S. Grade A Dark Amber", and the ingredient list says simply "made exclusively from the sap of the sugar maple tree".
The cans I've seen are clean and undamaged.
Their website (www.maplegrove.com) has lots of good info, including this explanation of what "Grade A" means USDA Grade A light, medium and dark amber are considered table grades. USDA Grade B is a dark, strong flavored maple syrup. Often used in cooking, though some prefer it for table use as well. All are the same density. Lighter maple syrup has a more delicate flavor; darker maple syrup has a more pronounced maple flavor. Medium and dark amber are most widely available. Light amber, used for maple candy and maple cream, is made early in the season; Grade B is made late. Fancy Grade is also made early in the season. It has a light, delicate maple taste which is terrific on ice cream or pancakes.
So how much do you have to pay for 9 ounces of pure Vermont maple syrup? How's $2.00 sound?
They're Baaackkkk
Torengos are back in stock. Torengos are real popular with our customers. They're tortilla chips in a triangle shaped tube. Imagine what tortilla chips would be like if Pringles made tortilla chips....... They're only a buck.
They're The Cheesiest Fastest
Kraft Mac and Cheese now has a cool three-pack of heir mac and cheese dinners, and the three pack comes with a really neat NASCAR tin attached. They claim it's "collectible" on the label. In my experience, anything that comes with a label proclaiming it's collectible is a dead give-away that it isn't. That doesn't keep it from being cool, though. I wouldn't mind having a neat little tin box like this for stamps and stuff. The entire thing is only $3.75 at SCG.
Now, For The GOOD Stuff
Allen's Seasoned Southern Collard Greens, 28 oz, 70 cents
Allen's Purple Hull Peas (from fresh shelled), 15.5 oz, 35 cents
Smuckers Low Sugar Grape Jelly, 15.5 oz, $1.00
Crisco Butter Flavor Shortening Sticks 3-pack, $1.75
Tajin Sauce
I don't know. Couldn't find anything on the net about Tajin sauce, except what the label told me... It's made from chili peppers, and it comes from Mexico. So, I tried some the other night on some leftover Thanksgiving ham. This has a very mild kick, it's red, it's tasty, and sort of like homemade enchilada sauce without all the chili powder. Sort of. In any case, we've got three varieties of this sauce in stock for only 50 cents/bottle. You try it, and make up your own description!
A New Salsa
Territorial House Green Chile Sauce is the newest salsa in the house this week. It's packed by Pace for the famous Territorial House Restaurant. To read about a contest involving 45 different salsas where this version did well (a TEXAS test, no less), go to http//www.ribafoods.com/n_fw.asp
This is apparently a well known salsa in the West. We've got it for only $1.50. That price includes a 17 oz jar, the salsa inside of it, and the transport costs from San Antonio to here. All we add is sales tax.
Can't Do Cow's Milk?
SCG has goat milk based products from Coronado. Caramel syrup made with goat's milk, and milk caramel lollipops made with goat's milk. These are made in Mexico, where they know their goats.
The caramel syrup is called "Quemada". Found this on the web Cajeta quemada or plain, also known as dulce de leche or caramel topping, is perfect for authentic Mexican desserts. A very popular product by Coronado. Cajeta is pronounced ""kah-HAY-tah"". Very good for making alfajores.
